Upcoming Project: Liminality
We live in a world driven by power. Power is dynamic, constantly moving, constantly being taken and given. Because of its polyvalent nature, perceiving and managing power can be difficult. Its delicacy operates over a fine line. This piece of work is interested in exploring the idea of subtlety, and the fine line between one state and another, with specific attention to power roles.
The fine line between one emotion and the next.
The fine line between fantasy and reality.
This fine line between what separates power and no power.
Desire exists, and at what point on the line does it turn into disgust?
Right exists, and at what point on the line does it turn into wrong?
The upper world exists, and at what point on the line does it turn into the underworld? Kindness exists, and at what point on the line does it turn into malice?
To be human is to be hybrid, contradictory and ever changing. We live in a world where we are constantly precariously balanced between civilisation and savagery. One of the most contradictory and hypocritically perceived beings in history is the mermaid. She symbolises the fine line between power and vulnerability acutely in the way in which she is viewed by others.
With such a rich and varied history, the symbol of the mermaid is as changeable as the sea itself.
